The town of Cassino pre-war.
This photo from an old photo-postcard Ian picked up in a ruined building in Cassino during the fighting. The view is from the Abbey with Castle Hill in the centre rear of the photo, and shows the terraced slopes in the foreground.
Cassino after the massive aerial bombardment. (Click on the photo for an enlargement).

At "work" in Cassino:
Phot 1: l-r AJ Wilson, J Donoghue, LJ Leash after the March assault on Cassino.
Photo 2: Infantry advance through the rubble of the town of Cassino. Note the fixed bayonet - in the rubble of Cassino you were more likely to run into an enemy than see them in the distance.
Photo 3: G Reid operates a wireless set with one of the NZ tanks behind in the rubble.
All 3 photo's from the Alexander Turnbull library, copied from the Spring 1994 Defence Journal Quarterly.
